Kagyud Texts and Prayers
- Cloud of Joy - This is the daily recitation practice. The Guru Yoga of the Omniscient Lama Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo.
Homage to the Guru and the protector Manjushri. In this short sadhana where Manjushri and Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo are inseparable, begin with the training of devotion and pure perception, and then go for refuge.
DU DI NAY ZUNG CHANG CHUB BAR
From now until enlightenment
KON CHOK KUN DU LAMA LA
In the lama the embodiment of the three jewels
DAK SOK DRO KUN KHYAB SU CHI
I and all sentient beings take refuge
MON JUG CHANG CHUB SEM KHYED DO
And develop the enlightened mind (Bodhicitta) of aspiration and application.
DRO KUN DE DEN DUK NGAL DRAL
May all beings possess happiness and be free from suffering.
DE DANG MI DRAL TANG NYOM SHO
May they never be apart from happiness and remain in equanimity.
(Recite three times)
OM SWABHAWA SHUDDHA SARWA DHARMA SWABHAWA SHUDDO HO
CHO KUN MI MIG TON NYI GI
The nature of all dharmas being non-conceptual emptiness,
YING LAY NYING JAI RIK TSAL DHIH
From that ultimate expanse arises DHIH, the manifestation of compassionate awareness.
TRO DU TON CHAY YONG GYUR LAY
Lights radiate out and absorb back, accomplishing all aims, then transforms.
RANG DUN YI KHAR SENG TRI DANG
Within the mental space in front of one, upon a lion throne and
PEMA DAWAI DEN TENG DU
Lotus moon seat,
KUN DU DAK NYI LAMAI KU
Into the form of the lama, the embodiment of all.
GELONG CHA LUK SHAB KHYIL TRUNG
Wearing the robes of a bhikshu, feet in the Vajra position,
CHAG NYI THAB SHAY DOR TRIL ZIN
Holding in his hands the vajra of skillful means and the bell of supreme knowledge.
TSEN PAY RAB ZAY PEN SHU SOL
Extremely beautiful with the major marks and minor characteristics and wearing a Pandita hat.
DAY YI THUK U GUR KHYIM U
In his heart centre in the middle of a rainbow light tent
DA TENG MUM LAY JAMPEL YANG
Upon a moon disc is MUM which becomes Manjushri
GUR GUM DOK CHEN SHON NUI KU
Of youthful body the colour of saffron,
ZUR PHU NGA DEN UTPAL ZAY
His hair tied in the five bunches and adorned by utpal flowers.
CHAG YAY YESHE RAL TRI CHAR
In his right hand he holds aloft a sword of wisdom and
YON PAY SHER CHIN LEK BAM NAM
In the left he folds a volume of the Prajna paramita.
SHAB NYI DORJE KHYIL TRUNG SHUK
Both feet are in the Vajra posture.
LONG CHO ZOK KUI GYEN GYI LUB
He is bedecked in the ornaments of sambhogakaya and
THUKJAY MU PAI BU LA GONG
Gazes with compassion on his devoted sons.
KON CHOK TSA SUM PHAK PAI TSOK
The triple jewel and three roots, the exalted assemblies are
TRIN TAR TRIK PAI U NA SHUK
Gathered around like clouds. He is seated in the middle of them and
DAY YI NAY SUM DRU SUM LAY
From the three syllables in the three places,
OZER KAR MAR THING KA TRO
Radiate white, red and blue light rays
RANG GI LU NGAK YI SUM LA
To ones own body, speech and mind, and are
CHIK CHAR THIM PAY CHIN LAP SHUK
Simultaneously absorbed, bestowing blessings.
GO SUM DRIB DAK WANG ZHI THOB
The obscurations of the three doors are purified and one receives the four empowerments,
KU ZHI NGON GYUR KALDEN CHAY
Creating the good fortune to realize the four kayas.
LAR YANG SOL TAB MU NYI LAY
Again through marking supplication, instantly the
YESHE U NGA TRO PA YI
Five wisdom lights radiate out,
TRUL TOK TSEN ZIN YING SU JANG
Purifying all deluded thoughts and grasping to things as real, into the ultimate expanse.
MA CHU NAY LUK NYUK MAI NGANG
Thus in the state of the uncontrived / uncreated innate nature
MA YENG TSAY CHIK NYAM PAR SHAK
Remain one pointed without distraction.
(Thus within the state where the meaning and words are clear in one's mind, do the recitation.)
OM AH GURU MANJUGHOSHA SARWA SIDDHI HUNG
(Recite as much as possible, after that recite the prayer of the successive incarnations and then)
LAMA JAMYANG YER MAY PAI
The Lama and Manjushri inseparable
DAK MAY TONG PAI SHERAB GYI
Holds aloft the wisdom sword
YESHE RAL TRI CHAR WA YI
Of the supreme knowledge of egoless emptiness,
MA RIK LOK TOK DRA WA CHAY
Which cuts the net of ignorance and wrong views,
KUN JUNG BUB LAY YANG DAK DROL
Liberating us from the source of all delusion.
LO CHOK PEMOI KHA CHAY CHING
And opening the lotus of the supreme intellect,
JI NYI TON KUN JI SHIN TOK
Whatever meaning there is, accordingly may all be realized,
DE SHIK SHERAB THOB PAR GYUR
Attaining the supreme knowledge of the Sugatas.
JAMYANG LAMA U DU SHU
The Lama Manjushri dissolves into light
RANG THIM YER MAY THUK YI DRAY
And is absorbed into oneself, his and one's own mind become inseparable.
NANG DRAK RIK SUM CHO KUI LONG
All perceptions, sounds and awareness become the expanse of dharmakaya,
MA GAK LHUN DRUB E MA HO
The obstructed spontaneity. How wondrous !
(Dedication and supplication)
GEWA DI YI NYUR DU DAK
By this merit may I quickly
JAMYANG LAMA DRUB GYUR NAY
Accomplish the Lama Manjushri and
DROWA CHIK CHANG MA LU PA
Establish all sentient beings without exception
DI YI SA LA GU PAR SHO
On that level.
(Then the prayer of auspiciousness)
GYU SUM LAMAI TRIN PUNG TRIK
May the clouds of the lamas of the three lineages gather,
YIDAM NGODRUB TRANG CHAR BEB
May the nectar of the accomplishments of the yidams fall like rain, and
KHANDRO CHO CHYONG DRUK DRA DROK
May the dakas, dakinis and dharma protectors resound like thunder.
SI ZHI GAY TSEN JAY GYUR CHIK
Thus may all virtue in samsara and nirvana increase.
Thus at the request of my faithful and devoted foreign disciples, Karma Drubgyud Nyima and Dondrub Palmo, I, Karma Drubgyud Tenpa Yarphel Gyurmay Gocha Thinley Kunkhyab Palzangpo, known as the rebirth of Khyentse, wrote this as virtue during the waxing moon of the dark month. May it be the source of an expanding great wave of the two accumulations in myself and others.
